Microsoft has a program that they (used to at least) call MSAA. It provides students at participating institutions free copies of certain Microsoft stuffs, like Windows, Office, and sometimes some server goodies. It's a very good program and helps cut down ever so slightly on the rampant piracy and viruses spewing forth around campuses.

Or he might just know a guy that knows a guy...

For those who aren't students but are looking for MCSE/MCSA/WTFEverVistaCerts practice, Microsoft does a thing called TechNet Plus where you pay a yearly subscription and get "trial" copies of damn near every OS and productivity app MS makes. They're not locked down or limited, no expirations or anything like that. The license for the TechNet Plus subscription just says you can't use it on a production environment.
Yeah, ok. To the average Joe, that means nothing. They're just wanting to keep SysAdmins from abusing it to get around corporate licensing and get LOLCHEAPS server OSes.
Pretty much the only thing you won't get from TechNet Plus is Visual Studio, and they have a separate MSDN-based thing that will give you that.
